Expanding Column and Scatter Chart Data Sets. Date scale X axis getting messed up

I'm working on expanding a data set for a chart that I originally did not create.

I have daily rainfall plotted with bars and I also have various groundwater elevations plotted as scatter. When I try to expand my series data set, only the rainfall bar data appears to be associated with the X axis time scale. So the X axis changes when I add that rainfall bar data, but the scatter elevations do not get plotted correctly

Not sure what to do.. The date data for the various series (rainfall, elevation) Do not match up identically and are separate data sets.

Jon Peltier has a lot of good information on his web site. This entry discussing some of the tricks and difficulties when working with line-XY combination charts should help you understand how to keep both data series plotted correctly along the X axis.

Re: Expanding Column and Scatter Chart Data Sets. Date scale X axis getting messed up

I'm having a problem with file size. I'm trying to upload a Zip file that's 6.84 MB, which looks within the size restriction of 9.77 for that file type, but its saying its too large.

The Chart "Level all data" is the one I'm working with. I have data for dates going through June 2014, but I had to delete some because of the document size(I've only retained through decem 2013. Therefor, I'm trying to add data from November 2013 through December 2013)to be able to upload the file (maybe that's my problem). It appears that the person that created it referenced items in the name manager to plot the chart. I don't have much experience with name manager, but I've expanded the name manager data selection, but I'm still left with Data (specifically P3 and IR-1) that do not recognize the X axis dates.

Both the horizontal axes, primary and secondary, have fixed min/max values. I guess you would need to make sure they are the same AND encompasses the date periods you want plotting.

Re: Expanding Column and Scatter Chart Data Sets. Date scale X axis getting messed up

I have tried that. The problem that occurs is when I adjust my horizontal axis to expand the date range, the P3 and IR1 series do not shift accordingly on the chart. The snow depth and rainfall data are linked to the horizontal axis and shift accordingly, but the others do not. I'm not sure if its a problem with the series type I have for those data sets, or how I have name manager set up, or maybe the order that the series are in.

    Thanks for your responses.

P1 and P3 are on the primary axis. The axis you can see, with the dates on, is the secondary axis.

If you select the chart and then use ribbon Chart Tools > Format > Current Selection. In the dropdown list you will see "Horizontal (Value) Axis". select that and in the chart an area below the axis will be selected. Format Selection and set min/max.

You may indeed have to update some of the named ranges so they include new data. The named ranges are just cell references there are no dynamic named ranges being used.

Wow.. thank you! It appears that its not recognizing my data as dates for those. So is there a way I can do that or when I set my min and max or is it easier to convert the date to a number.

Assuming all new dates are valid then quickest way is to enter date in a cell and format as general. You can then copy/paste value.

You can try entering in date format but it doesn't always convert the value.
