Combine stacked and clustered bars in a chart

I'm using Excel 2007 by default but I have access to 2010 and 2013 if later versions provide a solution.

I'm attempting to chart data on student numbers. My data has 3 variables: year (2009, 2010, 2011), mode of study (full time or part time), status of student (home or overseas) - in reality there are more options for each variable but I thought if I can get it to work for a simplified dataset I can hopefully use the same technique for more complex data.

What I'd like to achieve is a combination of clustered and stacked bars. So for each year there would be clustered columns for status and those columns would be stacked to show mode of study. I've attached a small file of example data.

If it's simply not possible to do this, can anyone suggest another way of visualising the data?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,

Jon Peltier has a tutorial on clustered stacked column charts heree: http://peltiertech.com/clustered-sta...mn-bar-charts/

If you get stuck, pipe up.

Thank you for your reply teylyn, that looks like it will do just what I want so I will try it today and hopefully it will be successful. I may then need to try to persuade the money people to splash out on the utility to do it automatically.

Re: Combine stacked and clustered bars in a chart

It took a while to work through but I got there in the end, and it's worked as hoped (see new upload). Now I need to try it with some real data with more values, but I think it should be pretty much the same process.

Thanks again for your assistance, it's much appreciated.
