    Pivot table and running total

    Hi,

I am attempting to add a running total to my pivot table, at the bottom is a copy of an example from my spreadsheet and a screenshot of the example data and the pivot table if you are iffy about opening unknown xlsx files. I manually created the year grouping on the pivot table based on financial year.

I wish to change the Grand Total column to a running total without changing the layout of the data at all. I have found numerous solutions online however none of them work. I even added the Running Total column to the original data in the hopes of somehow adding it to the pivot table.

I have manually typed into column 16 how I want it to look.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    thanks
    jc

Your attachment already has a running total column..

    Isn't that what you want?
    Cheers!

Re: Pivot table and running total

    Hi NeedForExcel,

as per my post I manually added a running column to the right of the pivot table as an example of what I am after. I have a couple dozen spreadsheets with hundreds of data rows each, I don't want to manually add a running total column to all of them.

In the attached file, the running total in the pivot table.

I used the amount and choose the second tab, and choose for running total.

    See the attached file.
Notice my main language is not English.

I appreciate it, if you reply on my solution.

Re: Pivot table and running total

Thanks oeldere but it isn't quite what I'm after.

I need to keep the format of the pivot table but just add a running total instead of the grand total as the rightmost column. I had tried the right-click 'Summarise Data By...' then 'Show Values As' but for instance it puts the value 570 in the 1701 column against the row 20010905 which is incorrect.
    • The row labels are dates i.e. 20010905 is the date 05/09/2001
    • The data values are payments i.e. 570 is $570
    • The column labels are receipt types 1701, 1704

Using the Running Total method as above shows that two payments of $570 were made for 1701 on 11/07/2001 and 05/09/2001 which is incorrect.

The Blad2 sheet in your example is also in the wrong format as it doesn't show the days that the payments were made on.

    thanks

if I understand your question, I would go for the solution on blad3.

You asked for the solution on blad2.

    See for the attached file.

Re: Pivot table and running total

Thanks for your effort on this oeldere, but it seems what I want perhaps can't be done. Below is a screenshot of what I want though I had to manually create it. Basically turn the right hand grand total column into a running total that still allows me to see what transactions occurred on which day against which receipt code.

on my solution on blad 2 you can hide column I - P and you get the result you want.
