    comparison chart

    Hello,

I am trying to make an ilustrative chart which can show clearly the number of operational, effective and usage hours of an equipment VS the average operational, effective and usage hours for that equipment type for the last year.

Trying to make a clear comparison chart Actual VS Average, for each of these operational, effective and usage hours.

I came up with the chart attached here, but I was told that the comaprison is not clear enough and had to improve it.

Any ideas how can I make the comaprison more clear and obvious? I was thinking to use stacked columns but then the actual VS average comaprison will be clear?

    Any suggestions are welcomed,

    Thank you,
    Vasile

    Re: comparison chart

I notice a couple of items. For one, the there are two series called Operational Hours. Actually, you have this value plotted twice. What you don't have plotted is Effective hours.

Also all the averages are the same color so you can't tell which is which unless you hover over them on the chart.

Also you added Non Productive HRs to the legend manually, but it's not plotted.

Attached is my suggestion. I plotted the non-productive hours and temporarily assigned one of the entries a value so I could select the series and change the fill to red. I then set it back to zero. This makes it show up on the legend and it will be plotted should it get a value.

I changed the averages from bars to lines. I matched the colors of the bars to the lines for example Usage hours and Usage hour average are both orange. The bars are a slightly lighter color than the lines and I put in a fill pattern so you can still see them, but they are also distinguishable from the same color line.

My only regret is that the lines start and end over the SN labels. I wish they went from the leftmost column to the rightmost column. I might be able to do some "cheating" with helper cells and secondary axis. Also I would have preferred if the legend came out in order. That is Effective Hours, Average Effective Hours, Operational Hours, Average Operational Hours, etc. Apparently Excel puts them in chart type order.

I think this is the best we can do for now.

One spreadsheet to rule them all. One spreadsheet to find them. One spreadsheet to bring them all and at corporate, bind them.

A picture is worth a thousand words, but a sample spreadsheet is more likely to be worked on.

I just did another experiment. I think the chart looks a bit cleaner with the lines without the markers. I also noticed that I did not put the data labels back in.

And here's a version: No lines and markers only.

I just figured out why the bars are off center - they actually aren't. The unproductive hours are at zero.

Thanks for the format proposed, is quite inetersting. I will keep it as well in case the presenter likes it more.
In the meantime I came up with another format, stacked cluster combo, but I cannot fix the horizontal axis to show Equipment Type 1 SN1, Equipment Type 2 SN2....
Any idea how can I do that?

I can't figure out a way with the way you have the data formatted.

Jon Peltier likes to use a "dummy series" and label it to locate the axis labels in a clustered and stacked column chart: http://peltiertech.com/clustered-sta...mn-bar-charts/
