    Auto Populating Data Labels

I have a scatter plot with straight lines. Y axis is a numerical value and the X axis is a date range (see attached). I have four data series on said chart that correspond to inputted data on a daily basis. I also have a fifth data series that serves the purpose to draw a vertical line intersecting the X axis at todays date. Is there a way to auto populate data labels for each day that corresponds to the data point on each of the four data series that intersect today's date line?

    Hello,

I suggest you use a formula in a worksheet cell to combine the text that you would want to show and relate it to the data of the vertical line.

Then use the free XY Chart Labeler tool to add the data labels to the vertical line, so they show the information as a data label of the vertical line series.

If you need more help with that, please post a sample file with your setup, but make sure to replace confidential data like names, emails, phone numbers, etc. with dummy text.

    Re: Auto Populating Data Labels

    Thanks for the reply!

To hopefully add a little more detail about what I am looking to do....

The data I want to show is already embedded in the scatter plot since all of the data points are already there. I want to have excel show only a set of data labels for a given day. For example, on the included attachment, the vertical line drops down to a date of 5/9/18. That vertical line intersects four other lines (red, blue, green, black dash). Each one of those lines is composed of a scatter plot that already has data that directly correlates to the date of 5/9/18, so the data is already there. I am looking to see if I can have excel show the data labels for the four points, or the rather one data point per line that the vertical line intersects. I can easily go in a manually show the individual data labels, but I was hoping to find a way to make it happen automatically, and update automatically each day so that only four points are shown per day as the date moves forward.

    Re: Auto Populating Data Labels

Attached is an example of what I am trying to do. This example represents a manual entry to display the data labels. I would like data labels of this nature to populate automatically for each day, and only for one day (=today()) at a time.

    Re: Auto Populating Data Labels

You need a little data prep in your source data. Create the formula that generates the label text and apply it to all rows of your source data. Let the formula be something that only shows the text for the row that has today's date. So you end up with a column of formulas, but only one cell shows a value. Use that column as the source for the data labels, either with the XY Chart labeler tool or the "value from cells" option of native Excel.

    cheers,
