Grouping data in clustered column chart

    Hi everyone,

I am pretty new to charting in Excel. Here's an image to illustrate what I'd like to do.

    Columns.jpg

Rather than displaying each person as a separate column on the chart, I would like to group them by the level in column A of my data and then display the scores for each group in the chart. So, it will end up looking more like this.

    Bad drawing.jpg

I'm not even sure I'm explaining it correctly which is part of the reason I can't figure out how to operationalize it. I'm very appreciative of anyone who even reads this.
    Thanks so much!

Re: Grouping data in clustered column chart

For someone new to charting in Excel, I would emphasize that charts do not analyze data, they only show what is already in the spreadsheet. If I am understanding your pictures, you have a table/database showing name, level, and score. You want to get a count of how many people of each level had a certain score, and show that on a chart. Before you can create the chart, you will need to have the spreadsheet calculate the appropriate counts and other summary data. If you arrange this summary table well, then creating the chart should be straightforward.

Are you already able to summarize the data (whether using a pivot table or a COUNTIFS() function or similar), or will you need help with the spreadsheet part of the problem, too?

Re: Grouping data in clustered column chart

Thank you! I can write some rudimentary formulas to analyze what I have. For instance, I know if I write "=COUNTIFS(A2:A8,1,C2:C8,70)" it will return 1, but it seems like I would have to include many, many criteria in order to capture all of the scenarios I eventually want to chart, especially because what I uploaded is just an example. My real data set is much larger.
Perhaps I should take a step back and move my question into another forum category which deals with analysis?

    Hello,

what you have mocked up looks like a clustered stacked column chart, only there is nothing stacked. It is not in Excel's native offerings, but with some careful data arrangement and a few charting tricks it can be done. Jon Peltier has an article about the technique here:

Re: Grouping data in clustered column chart

Perhaps, though this is also the subforum for pivot tables, too, and a pivot table might be the easiest way to perform the desired analysis. Intro to pivot tables: https://www.excel-easy.com/data-****...ot-tables.html

For example, based on your simple table in the first picture, I could create a pivot table using score as the row labels, level as the column labels, and count of ID as the pivot table values. Then I could create a pivot chart from the pivot table and I should get something really close to the chart you show in the second picture.

If your real data is more extensive and/or your real analysis is going to be more complex, a pivot table with slicers and filters and the other tools that come with pivot tables may be a useful way to analyze your data.
