Shaded area representing uncertainty bars on a graph

    Dear all

    Please see the attached spreadsheet.

I was wondering how to automatically produce uncertainty lines on a graph, with the area in between them shaded (I have described what I mean using drawing tools).

In this example, the correct value is 50 +/- 1 so could be either 49, 50 or 51. This area must be shaded.

How can I do this? Do I need to use an area chart?

    Thanks

    Alis

Usually area charts are used to create filled areas. But in your case a stacked Column would be more suitable.

Firstly the lines can be added by using an additional xy-scatter series.
Note you will need to fix the Min and Maximum value of the x axis other wise the lines will never reach the end of the chart.

The lower value and +/- value can then be used for 2 series on the secondary axis plotted as stacked column. Format the lower column to have no fill or border. Set the Gap width of the columns to 0 to completely will the plot area.

    Thank you so much, Andy.

Would you mind explaining the second point a bit more please? I am a little confused.

    Thank you

    Starting with your chart.

Use the Source Data dialog to add 3 new series.

1st new Series will provided dataum lines and is based on G2:H6
2nd new series will provide padding to raise shaded are to correct height
3rd new series will provide shade

Format 1st new series to have no marker, required border.

Move 2nd and 3rd new series to secondary axis.
Use Chart Options dialog to enable secondary X axis.
Change chart type of 2nd and 3rd new series to stacked column.
User Source Data dialog to set ranges for these 2 series to J2 and J3.
    Delete secondary Y axis.
Format 1 of the column series to have a gap width of 0.
Format 2nd new series to have no fill or border.
Format 3rd new series to have desired fill.

Fix X axis Maximum value to make lines reach across plot area.

Format secondary X axis to not show label
