How to have the year label center and bigger tick marks at the beging/end of each year

    Hi,

I want to plot a monthly data series and on the x axis I would like to have year labels center.
I need to have tick marks at the end of each quarters (mar, jun, sep and dec) (minor tick marks). I need to have bigger tick marks (major tick marks) at the beginning of each year.

I have attached to the spreadsheet that show the closest I can get to my goal but I am missing the major tick marks at the beginning of each year. Colums A and B show where I would like to have the tick marks.

Every month I have new data and I drop old data.
    Any advice would be helpful.

Given the amount of data and pretty equally spacing of the time slots I would go with the simply multi category approach.

Re: How to have the year label center and bigger tick marks at the beging/end of each year

Thank you very much for your reply! Is there a way to have smaller tick marks instead of these big bars? Also I tried to remove the month labels but it did not work. I only want to display the year.
I was given a graph that was created with a different application and I have to reproduce exactly the same graph in Excel.

    Thanks for your help,

If you format the axis line to None the tick marks will be removed

can you post an example/picture of the chart you are trying to create.

You are probably best off created the tickmarks and labelling your self using a dummy series

This link was really useful thank you.
It is almost perfect now but I have issue with the marker.

I need the tick marks inside the graph but when I set the marker to + sign the tick marks are crossing the x-axis. I tried to use a simple vertical bar or a T (upside down) but because Excel center the markers I can't get the tick marks inside the graph.

Rather than markers try using Y error bars.

Change the Y value from 0 to 5 (for example). The add error bars, setting Y error bars to 100% minus no cap.
    Delete x error bars.

    Hi,
Thank you for your reply. I don't think this solution will work in my context because the data will be always changing and therefor the y-axis will be changing. If I set the dummy series to 5 today, this value might be too small or too big next time. The workbook I am creating will be used to create a publication and each time the user refresh the workbook the graphs must be fine without any manual fixes needed.

You could always use a formula to calculate a value that is a percentage of the plot area. Then use Custom Error bar values to make it dynamic
