# Latitude/longitude computation?

1. ## Latitude/longitude computation?

Hi!

I can find many formulae to compute the bearing and range between two sets of lat/long coordinates.

However, I wish to find the lat/long of a second point given the coordinates of the first point, and the bearing and distance from the first point to the second point.

Any help appreciated. Thank you!

Edit: The distance between the points will be less than 20 nautical miles, so that should simplify the equation. Register To Reply

Here is a formula that I found online. "Lat/Long given radial and distance" is what I'm trying to do. However, I'm having trouble converting it into useful Excel equations. Register To Reply

... and typically are the points used within say the same 1 degree of latitude, and what's the precision required?

If they're all on the same latitude +/- 1 degree then the longitudinal distance in miles between two points can be fixed (subject to the precision required) and avoid more complicated formulae that would be needed to establish the mileage between two longitudes at any latitude between 0 & 90 degrees. In which case straightforward Euclidean geometry for a flat surface could be used. Register To Reply
