    Establishing a Character Limit

How do you establish a character limit for a cell? I have a form that we have our employees complete that requires a 16 digit number. Every time we enter a 16 digit number into the cell, it turns the 16th number into a zero or puts it into scientific notation. My thought was that I would establish 4 consecutive cells that would take only 4 numbers each and once it reached the fourth number it would move over to the next box. However, I don't know how to format that.

    Hi,
Change the number format of your cell to "String" to keep the 16 digits in the cell
(Select the Cell, then CTRL+1, select Text)
    GC Excel

You can certainly use Data Validation to limit the character length to 4. data/DataValidation/Text length

Is it actually a 16-digit number or is it a 16-character numeric text string? If the latter, format the cells as text. You can do that even if it is a number and when processing via any calculation use the VALUE() function.

If you limit it to 4 characters, is there a way that once the user has reached 4 characters, it will automatically tab to the next cell?

    Yes, only with a macro

    Re: Establishing a Character Limit

Thanks, but I don't want to do that. We will just format as text and keep it as 16 characters.

    Thanks to all for help.
