Matching names to items in a list and summing prices

I have constructed an excel sheet with different groups of people where each person selects an item from a list drop down list (the main list is situated next everyone's names and their selection). I have then created IF functions to put the name of the person next to the item selected in the main list. My problem is that in the main list each item has a price and I want to have a cell underneath peoples names that gives the sum of the price of the items the people have selected. What sort of function would I be using to do this?
