How to randomise staff for roster

    Hi,

I've attached a sample spreadsheet. Essentially, I have 4 staff members and 4 shifts in a day. All the staff members are fine with doing any 1 shift a day. Hence, our agreement was that I will set up a randomised table to randomly assign a staff to a shift per day.

Problem is, I don't know how to do so. As I showed in the 'sample' (in the spreadsheet), each staff can take only one shift a day, and technically no one minds any shift more than another (i.e. it's ok to have one person take 5 shifts at Shift 1 and another person does only 2). The only thing is they trust that I will randomise it.

Can anyone suggest a way to set up the randomisation?

    Thank you very much!

[Note: I also have a small table to calculate how many times each staff member is being randomly assigned to Shift 1, 2, 3, 4 etc. It's just for extra knowledge, but it's not important in the scheme of things because I do not need to ensure even distribution across the 4 staff.]

Put this array formula in I3, then drag down and accross

...confirmed by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER to activate the array, not just ENTER. You will know the array is active when you see curly braces { } appear around your formula. If you do not CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER you will get an error or a clearly incorrect answer.

Thank you. It seems to work for me now too, perhaps I did not paste it in the correct column earlier.
