    Vehicle Maintenance Spreadsheet

So I am trying to set up a spreadsheet for a fleet of vehicles that will alert me to when a particular truck needs a regular service.

I think I should use an IF statement.

It seems like the IF statement should be something like if the cell value is greater than the previous oil change mileage plus 250 then the cell should be filled with red colored text. Is that correct?

If it is, how do I put in multiple IFs? If it is 250 more than the last oil change then use red text AND if it is 3000 more than the last transmission check then use green text, AND if it is 6000 more than the last tire rotation then use orange text.

Or should I use conditional formatting - when the value is greater than x, put a check mark in the next cell?

In an ideal world, I want a "250m service needed" to show up in the cell next to the mileage whenever it goes up another 250 miles. The same for the 3k mileage service, 12k service, etc. I am just not sure how to get there.

You do not use formulas in cells to produce formatting.
You use Conditional Formatting whenever you want to format a cell (font/fill/etc) based on certain conditions. You have to create one CF rule per color.

In an ideal world, I want a "250m service needed" to show up in the cell next to the mileage whenever it goes up another 250 miles.
I'm sure we can do that for you but it would help to see a small representative sample of your data along with the desired output (which you can enter manually) based on that data.

To upload an Excel workbook, follow these steps:
    1) Click on "Go Advanced"
    2) Click on "Manage Attachments"
    3) Click on "Choose File"
    4) Choose your file and click on "Open"
    5) Click on "Upload"
    6) Click on "Close this window"
