Excel not loading files I double click from email attachments

Hi,
I'm using Excel 2003 (an oldie but goodie...) on XP (another oldie but....) and lately it has stopped loading/opening files that I've received as email attachments and double clicked on.
The program itself opens, but no file is loaded. If I save the file, I can then search for it and open it same as any other file that is saved on my system, but the program won't load a file straight from the email.
This is a problem when I receive a .xlsx file or similar that needs to be converted.
I can see that the conversion is taking place to 'saved files' but any search for either the file name or a folder called 'saved files' comes up blank so I can't use this as a work-around.
Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum.

I had exactly the same problem. I never did find out the cause of the problem, but the solution was to remove then re-load Excel (having made sure that I had the Excel licence number!).

Not sure if 2003 is available form the internet, but you probably have the CD. (Alternatively it might be the gods way of telling you that it's about time you upgraded? )
