files downloaded from forum won't open

I haven't been on for a while and now I find if I download a user's file and open it I get the message "Excel cannot open file xxx.xlsx because the file format or file extension are not valid. ..."
Any ideas? using IE as browser.

The top of the last file I downloaded is this (opened in notepad)

Can you post the URL of the file that you're referring to?

Good point. The thread is here: http://www.excelforum.com/excel-prog...6932-text.html at the bottom are the links "example excel.xlsm" and "download" both produce a similar result for me.

Odd. But then sometimes this forum does funny things. I downloaded it and it opened fine. Can you open it when I reattach it here?

Re: files downloaded from forum won't open

    Thanks for having a look.

With the files you added I am getting the same results but on further investigation it appears to be an IE problem.

On IE the downloaded file has a name in the format 434542d1449745364-text-example-excel.xlsm (and I can't open it)
Whereas from chrome the file name is example excel.xlsm (and I can open it)

IE is version 11 running on Windows 7

Re: files downloaded from forum won't open

My experience is that IE 11 adds a lot of "extras" to the file I downloded from the forum. As I could not stop IE from doing this I downgaded to I.E 10 and then there was no problem.

You other alternative is to "strip" all extra information from the file keeping just file name and exstention then there should be no problem opening the file.

Re: files downloaded from forum won't open

It might not be IE. When I download using IE my Internet Security package pops up to see if I am sure. (This doesn't happen with Chrome). Normally I say "OK" and land up with the rather useless file which I mentioned.

BUT ... if I press cancel on the internet security IE still allows me to download the file and that file is ok.

hmmm sounds like "OK" is messing up the file?
