Excel closes each time I open a file?

I have a HP Spectre 64 bit notebook and recently installed Office 2016. Each time I open an Excel workbook, Excel closes down and when Excel re-opens I can access the file OK? It does this with each file I open?

The Office version installed is 32-bit - could this be the problem? If yes, must I uninstall 32-bit and install 64-bit?

I am still experiencing this problem & would appreciate any advice.
