How to highlight names that have moved columns?

    Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knew how to highlight the names in a spreadsheet that have moved columns using formula? For example, I have a spreadsheet and a section that contains student names and the grade they got for September. I also have another section next to it which is October and that also contains their grades. Is there a way of highlighting the students that have increased their grade or decreased from September compared to October? Could I do that by formula?

Ive attached an example spreadsheet which hopefully makes it clearer.

    Any help is greatly appreciated

    Thanks

    Matt

The attached uses conditional formatting to highlight which students have a different grade in the two periods.

As nice as it would be to highlight in different colours those that have gone up in grade and those that have gone down, this would make things slightly more complicated.
Haven't put the effort in as I don't know if you'd need that level of detail.

    Hi BSB

That works great thank you. how much more complex would it be? Wouldn't it be something similar to this which you gave me but slightly changed? =AND(I4<>"",COUNTIF(A$4:A$21,I4)=0)? It would be nice to also have a colour that shows the students who have decreased but if it too complicated then don't worry about it

    Thanks for you help

Turns out it's not quite as complex as I first imagined.

See attached. Green = Grade improving. Red = Grade slipping.
