    Freeze Panes greyed out

Probably a stupid question, but I've searched all over and can't find out what I did to cause my freeze pane icon to become inactive in my workbook. It isn't all workbooks, so it is something specific to the workbook. I have Excel 2016 and am using Windows 10. Any ideas?

Without seeing the file any of the solutions is possible.
Post the file but remove any sensitive data.

Ensure you describe your problem clearly, I have little time available to solve these problems and do not appreciate numerous changes to them.

Thank you, here is the file.

The first tab, which is a newer tab doesn't have frozen panes and I am unable to freeze them. The second tab is an older tab that I was able to previously freeze the panes on.

    Re: Freeze Panes greyed out

Wow, that is really strange. I do not have answer yet but I have been unable to find the same situation anywhere. This happens when you go to Page Layout View but you are in Normal View. There is no protection in effect. Even stranger than the second sheet has Freeze Panes currently in effect but the button is grayed. I can just confirm that I am using the same OS/Office as you and see the same problem.

On the second sheet, if you go to Page Layout view, you get a warning that the panes are frozen, and will be unfrozen if you go to that view. If you say yes, the panes remain frozen and you stay in Normal view. So there is something in there pretty deep. I am tempted to say it's a corrupted file but I can't prove it.

Your worksheets aren't protected, but your workbook is. Go to the Review tab then un-select the 'Protect Workbook' button and your Freeze Panes should work again (I'm on 2010, but I assume 2016 has a similar layout).

That is not working for me on 2016. The workbook does not appear to be protected (or shared).

Well that makes me feel somewhat better that I couldn't figure out the solution on my own.

This isn't the first time that this has happened. The last time I just ended up copying the tabs to new workbook (since new ones don't have the issue) and saving over the old file. I guess I can just do that again but I was really hoping it was some setting that had been adjusted and not an issue with the file itself.

    Strange...
Opened in 2010, the workbook definitely appears protected for structure (see pic).

I've no idea why it appears that way in 2010 but not in 2016

This is what I see in 2016 under the review tab. When I click on "Protect Workbook" I get a dialog box with limited options and not the dropdown that you get in 2010. I wonder how would I get to the similar dropdown in 2016? I did notice that the info tab under File has protect workbook highlighted, but I don't see a way of unprotecting it.

In the dialog box at the top right of your picture, try un-selecting the box labelled 'Structure'?

I had tried that and it just greyed out the "ok" button so I couldn't click it.

    Re: Freeze Panes greyed out

It seems you're not the only person to have this problem - it's discussed on the MS forum here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/o...2-e3c4bc33e9f5
The last post (by Tom Ogilvy (MVP)) says:
In the INFO screen where it shows you that your structure is protected and highlighted in yellow, click on the dropdown arrow in the Protect Workbook button to the left of the message. In the dropdown choose/click on Protect Workbook Structure option. This is a toggle based on my testing so if you do that and then go to info again it will not show the structure as being protected.
this is assuming no password was set. It if was, you will need to furnish the password I would guess.
In the dialog that appears in this thread, the Structure option will always be checked - but it is not always in effect.
If that doesn't work then I'm completely out of ideas - sorry!

    Re: Freeze Panes greyed out

Unfortunately that didn't work. I'm beginning to think it is a glitch with the program. I opened a new file and clicked "Protect Workbook" which protected it; however, I still had the ability to freeze and unfreeze the panes. It looks like it is just a coincidence that the workbook is showing as protected and the freeze panes are greyed out.

Oh well, i do appreciate everyone's help. If anyone has any other ideas, I'll be happy to give them a try.

    Dear Mavrick..

Please give a password . Protect it. [In the option shown in your above image]. click ok. Click againthe option - "Protect Workbook". Unprotect the workbook by reprating the password. Now check the Freeze panes option.

I have used this option and it works.

    Best Regards.

[Moderating]Unfortunately it does not add to the discussion to simply say that you have the same problem. If you can contribute the solution, feel free. If you have tried the suggestions in this thread but they don't work for you, then you can continue to monitor the thread (note: you can Subscribe to a thread without posting to it). I had a similar problem with freezing the columns and here is what I found: when the function Page Layout is turned on, the Freeze Pane grayed out.

    Re: Freeze Panes greyed out

I found the solution to this issue. Excel 'thinks' the Freeze Pane feature on the ribbon does not exist, hence greyed out. I created a new custom group and added Freeze Panes to it. Bob's your uncle. This reenable the feature on each worksheet again. Oddly enough, the new group I made did not appear in the ribbon anywhere I could find.

I added both freeze panes to the main ribbon and now these are both un-greyed.

Ouch. When it worked for me I did not research it further.
