As stated above I get that error when opening an Excel file.
I googled on it but I only get Q/A about file locked for editing by 'UserName'.
What does locked for editing by 'admin' mean?

Is the file on a shared server?

It is. On a shared network drive.
If the file is on network drive... may be your IT administrator using 'admin' login is locking the file.
Or check that you have appropriate permission in the folder.
Other than that, there could be 3rd party software and/or driver that's causing issue.
To trouble shoot 2nd case. Start your computer in safe mode. If the issue does not persist in safe mode, then likely cause is the 2nd.

The user name in the message is simply whatever is entered in the User name option in Excel. In many companies where I have worked, the default user name was 'admin' as all computers were built from the same image, so any user who had a file open appeared as 'admin' to other users.

Please remember to mark your thread 'Solved' when appropriate.
Normally, the issue happens when a document was opened in an Office client program, and the program was not closed properly.
When a document is opened by a client program, SharePoint Services puts a write lock on the document on the server. The write lock times out after 10 minutes. Users cannot modify the document during the time when the document is locked.
Regarding the situation, please wait 10 minutes, click Edit in ProgramName to check it in normally in the client program, and then check the outcome in Word Online.
