I have certain cells set up with a data validation drop-down list which works great however, I am trying to figure out if it is possible to have this list but also allow free typing in those cells for miscellaneous options that are not in the list of typical items?
Un-check the tickbox on the data validation error alert tab when you define the list.

You have the option to uncheck the box "Show error alert after invalid data is entered" in the Data Validation dialogue box under the 'Error Alert' tab.
You can then add whatever in the validation list without an error popping up.
