Can 365/2016 autosave without using OneDrive?

I am stuck doing project work on version 2016 because God hates me. From what I can tell, you are now forced to use OneDrive for autosave; every article/forum I found says the way to avoid OneDrive is to -- wait for it -- turn autosave OFF, and problem solved (God also has a sense of humor. If your arm hurts, stop using that arm.). Is there any way to have the wasn't-broke-so-Microsoft-fixed-it previous method of just automatically saving to a hard drive location every 3 or 5 minutes?
Chip, if you can read this, you're STILL making the world a better place with your immeasurably valuable gifts. Every week, you continue to help me (and untold numbers of others) tremendously. Practically no alternative outlets can match your effectiveness, even over the vast number of topics you demystify and empower usage of. You were, and still are, amazing.

I might be okay after all. It appears that "auto-recover" will behave as desired as you turn off "auto-save". (Tools/options/save. Umm, maybe that's FILE/options...grrr)

My main concern was prompted by an slew of reputable article writers expressing that during common usage (that customers have practiced for decades) that the *new* paradigm of auto save is to overwrite original files without prompting, similar to the literally insane smartphone practice of saving without the opportunity to "escape (or 'go back') without saving". Surprise, surprise, it sounds like MS is heading that way. I'm so joyous that they always know (and force abidance with) what they decide is best for us

I turn auto save off on as many files as I remember to, simply because my work often involves trying things out, and then going back, or making small changes and saving multiple copies. I've overwritten so much work because of auto save! Be careful with "auto recover", as its behavior seems rather sporadic.

I'm trying to respond - that $^%$ %$%$&!!ing "Securi Firewall" on this site thinks one of the words in my text is an html command or something and refuses to let me post.

If you have < or > signs, make sure there are spaces around then.

Re: Can 365/2016 autosave without using OneDrive?

You're 100% correct on the Securi issue. Something new seems broken now; when I preview, it does not fill my post content into the big editable text box.

Next to the option, if you click on the little "I" for info, then click "tell me more" (I'll show the link below), it seems to say you can turn that horror off by default for every Excel file:

"How can I make the default to not AutoSave?
If you turn AutoSave Off for an individual file the program will remember to keep it off every time you reopen that file. If you switch it back On for an individual file, it will remember to keep in on for that file.
If you want to turn AutoSave off, by default, for all files, go to File > Options > Save and uncheck the box next to AutoSave OneDrive and SharePoint Online files by default on < application > ."

So do it for Excel, and separately for Word, etc.

Perhaps they added this because of the uberidiotic "having to remember to do it on each file" condition you describe?

Note, it says to restart the program for it to take effect.

BTW all this concern is not just from "reputable writers" that lament this stupidity, it's in Microsoft's own help files:

"What if I want to do some quick “what if” changes that I don’t want others to see?
The easy way is to turn the AutoSave switch off before you make your changes. If the changes are meant to be temporary and not saved, close the file. Then click No when you are asked to save. If you decide you do want to save the changes, just turn AutoSave back on."

Say it with me: MS does not understand computers.

FYI I can't edit that post either. It thinks it is length 0. I logged off and on - no help.
