Hi I'm after a macro so that when a sheet is selected it updates the external links and comes up with a message that say "Updating values - please wait". I would then like the message to disappear when the links have finished refreshing.

As far as I know you can't just display a message in a box like that (happy as always to be proven wrong!)
Way back in the day I came up with something similar though - You activate the sheet and it immediately displays another (hidden) sheet which had a message "Updating" on it, while it does stuff on the background...
It won't let me post the code, it keeps saying I'm trying to inject SQL
So, I've attached a Workbook - Select Sheet 2 to view the code.
The message "Updating" message is in a hidden Sheet 3.
It'll pop a message box up as an example but you've not provided the update code so I can't do much with that part - Hopefully this will send you on your way though

Hi how to you make those specific cells to be the (Array("message")), I'm fairly basic with excel.

Marked range (like in attach. on sheet2), from menu choose option Home / Copy / as picture. Then paste it on sheet1, select picture, click into Formula bar and type (or marked with mouse) range which you want to display 'on picture'.
Then if you change message in cell on Sheet2, it will automatically change 'on picture'.
Hi I'm trying to do this, however I can't click on the formula bar after I've selected the pasted picture?
Oh wait I got it you mean the range formula bar to the left of the normal formula bar.

No. On left you can apply name (for range / picture / object etc). Standard formula bar.
Look below. Picture is selected and you can formula bar is accesible and you can put range of cells which you want to display inside picture :
