Conditional Formatting to Remove Bottom Border form Cell when Text is Entered

I have a Microsoft Excel Worksheet with several cells to enter Genealogical information.

The cells where I want information entered, such as a first name, middle name, last name; all have a bottom border on the blank form cells. I would like NO bottom border for these cells if any information is entered.

Is there any way using Conditional Formatting to accomplish this formatting without doing it manually for each cell?

    Highlight Column E
In Home Tab, click on Conditional Formatting
    Click on New Rule
Choose Format only cells that contain
In Format Only Cells with box select No Blank from drop-down list
Next to Preview click on Format
In new window click on Border
    Select None
    Click OK then OK

    mikeava,

I found that after using this Conditional Formatting it works fine for eliminating the bottom border on the cell where the data entry occurs but it also eliminates the bottom border on the cell above enough though it is empty. Any thoughts on how to get around this?

Hi - I see what you mean, sorry that I did not catch it before. Excel is funky when you put borders on cells.
So for example if you go to Cell E9 and Right-click and Format Cell then Border you will see a line on the top and bottom, even though you think
it would only show a line on the bottom.

The only thing I can come up with is to remove all the borders in all your cells. Then go to E4 and just type underline in the cell (like 26 times).
Then just copy that cell in the fields you need. That way you don't need a Conditional Format since once you start typing something in it will override
    the underline you put in.

    Kinda a pain I know!

    Hope this helps.

I am not sure what you mean - I tried typing in the word underline and it didn't seem to work. I don't have a problem doing it 26 times as long as it works. I want this to be a blank form to send to people to fill out. Can you give me further clarification.

Sorry I confused you. I did not mean a formula just underline - next to the zero on top of your keyboard.

OK I get it! What a dunderhead, sometimes us senior citizens take a little time to understand.

I also thought of just putting in a small row above each data entry cell and then I think your original proposal would work.

    Thanks for your help.
