    Top of line cut off

This is from a workbook that was populated by a web form with mostly spam. I didn't write the code, I was just editing the workbook and noticed that the first line of row 3 is horizontally truncated.

    1. What's a novice-friendly tool I could use that would tell me what characters are in that truncated cell? I'd like to report this issue and mention what character caused the problem. Not something like Vim or a command line. Maybe some free programmer's editor with a nice GUI? Maybe Excel can do it?

    2. Does this indicate a problem with the software that populated the workbook (lack of data scrubbing) or should Excel have skipped the characters that caused this when displaying the cell?

The data is all there. You just need to align the cell contents to the top of the cell.

9 out of 10 times these are so called line breaks.

you can searh and replace for it. by opening the find and replace dialog and use CTRL+J in the find and leave replace blank, then all line breaks will be removed.
it is on the ascii table character 10.

please read https://contexturesblog.com/archives...eaks-in-excel/ to learn more.

in HTML the linebreak is <br>
so that might also be helpfull in your search for a solution to your problem.

OK, I'm calling this a bug but at least now I know how to view the cell without copying and pasting the text.
