I would like cells A1:G1 to change colour when cell S1 reads "Parts In" which is one item on a drop down list please can you help - i assume this is conditional formatting but do not know how to write the formula.

hi Fran. select the range you want to apply to (i.e. A1:G1)
in Excel 2007 & above, go to Home -> Conditional Formatting -> New Rule -> Use a formula to determine which cells to format -> Format values where this formula is true:
=$S$1="Parts In"
Format the colour you want

Select A1:G1
Home tab > Conditional formatting > New Rule > Use a formula to determine which cells to format > Format values where this formula is true: =$S$1="Parts in" > format as required
