Excel 2013 FN keys

I am using excel 2013 in windows 8 on a lenovo, and the FN keys do nothing, F4 does not repeat, F2 does not access the text, why would this be?

No, they just do things like turn down the volume, ask me if i want to connect to another projector, but nothing related to excel. F7 doesnt spellcheck, no F keys do anything

I mean, if there are two or three different options on each of the keys containing the F functions, such as Volume Control, are you sure that the F functions have not been designated as "secondary" function on those keys, and so require combining with some other key, e.g. FN, ALT, SHIFT or CTRL?
