What you reckon can be done corresponds to what I also seem to have found. I've used it and it works; however it isn't sufficient for the ultimate purpose. In fact the latter is even worse, because as things are there also needs to be a 'bottomer' at the bottom of each page (and this also depends on which section and is conditional based on the front cover). Ouch! I'm feeling that a fundamental rethink may be required and/or give up on making this (template, actually) too sophisticated / automated.
