Plot of events occurring during the day

    Hello,

I am trying to see how often an intermittent event occurs in a 10 user system.

When it occurs, I have them write down the time of day and what they were doing.

    My data looks like this:

    07:30 event

    08:32 event

    08:35 event

I am trying to figure out a useful way to plot the data so that I can see if changes I make are improving things over the next several weeks.
Right now I just have "events per day", and maybe that is useful enough.

When I first thought to try and collect the data I was imagining a sawtooth looking plot of elapsed time since last event, where it would reset to zero at each event time, then start increasing till the next event and reset to zero again, but I couldn't figure out how to do it in Excel. Is there a way to make a plot like this, or is there an even more useful way to show the data?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Immiyh,

    Try the approach attached.

Col A has the times the events occurred (sample spans 07:00 - 19:00)
Col B calculates the "time difference" (=A3-A2, copied down).
Create a Line Graph using the two columns.
Result shows you the differences between events as the day progresses.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for looking at this, it does help, I definitely want to show the time difference as you described.

As I started plugging in real data, it looks like the time axis along the bottom is not... uhmmm .... time referenced?
By that I mean if the time span is from 07:00 to 19:00, and the only two events are at 08:00 and 09:00, they are shown as four equally spaced points through the day.
Is there a way to make the bottom axis more of time reference? Like a tick at each evenly spaced hour, then my data points would be relative to that scale?

    Thanks again for any help.
