    3D modeling

    Hi dear Excel forum member,

I want to make a 3D wire model of a building based on nodes(x,y,z coordinates) and beams. Is it possible to let Excel draw a wire model based on this data?

    Thanks!

    Bas

    Re: 3D modeling

Yes it is but it is probably not the best software for that. A proper 3D modeling programs should be able to do a better job but it will most likely require some macro programming skills.
If it's very basic and a small amount of data then you could try with Excel.
Here are some links to a guy who is really pushing the boundaries of Excel with some 3D wireframe modelling:

Like the site name suggests, this is not ordinary use of Excel, that guy is a true Expert.

    Re: 3D modeling

I'm sure it is "possible", but I don't know how easy. The main problem that I see is that Excel does not have built in support for 3D scatter plots.

If you are going to succeed, it is probably going to start with something like Andy Pope's 3D scatter plot simulator, then figure out where to plot the nodes and how to connect those dots. (http://andypope.info/charts/3drotate.htm ).

I suspect it is possible in Excel. I also suspect that you might be better off finding a different application with native support for 3D scatter plots. Maybe even an architecture or drafting specific program that will already know how to do this.

If you use and adapt Andys example add the code in this example to rotate the chart with the mouse pointer
