hi,

Here is a solution with a formula:
Please try:Formula:Please Login or Register to view this content.
Alternative small macro in sheet module.
Torachan,
Mission statement; Promote the use of Tables, Outlaw the use of 'merged cells' and 'RowSource'.
thank you Hans
where do i paste the formula?

at the beginning of your random list.where do i paste the formula?
See attached workbook of Post #2.
okay hans let me try that okay ty
I am not sure where to paste formula I paste on o1 and a3 change the names: to New Names: change a2 to column b and hit f9 and have no idea of what to do next
when i hit pick names it creates the other sheet

@west123, have you enabled macros ?
I have not enabled macros.
The formula in attached workbook Post #2 is not linked to the button.
I left the button untouched, so don't press the button.
so what do i do? I just don't want it to create a new sheet like in post # 9 i have it in my workbook as random then when i click it creates sheet 1 like in the pictures
Don't press the button.I just don't want it to create a new sheet
If you want pick new names, please press F9 or change how many (cell A2)

hans don't seems to work when changing how many names to pick or after hitting f9 nothing happens
not sure if file got corrupted only works when hitting pick names but open the other sheet
Please upload (the esseantial part of) your not working sheet.
On your 2 pictures in Post #9 the formula seems to work.
On the first picture the number in Cell A2 is 5 and there are 5 names in column E.
On the second picture the number is 1 and there is 1 name (another name) in column E.
Pressing the button is useless.
The formula is not linked to the button.
I haven't changed anything about that.
I have left the button untoched.
here is the file

I don't see a file in Post #16, but did you read Post #15 in the meantime.
okay yes its works after hitting the button and creates the sheet1 in the picture but not when i do f9, but why can we have it work from the button ?l.png
this is file 9 in post# 16 and f9 don't work

i read post # 15
Yes we can also.but why can we have it work from the button ?
Please try my formula of Post #2 and create this macro and assign the button to this macro.

hans i don't think i can do that,
i don't even know what your asking me to do, i have zero Knowledge Of VBA or formulas if i knew i would do it or you can tell me in steps and ill do the changes havee no problem with that
If you've never implemented a macro before, you're asking me quite a bit and I can't explain it in a few sentences,
because this is the first macro I've created and implemented for me.
That's why I've created a solution in Post #2 without a button and without a macro.
Then I made a solution with a button, because you explicitly asked for it.
okay, will have to wait and see if someone else comes with a solution,
but solution in post#2 don't work don't even know where the formula goes, i mean i can use that option for now, until someone helps with making it work with the button
In your workbook of Post #16, it doesn't work, because you didn't implement the formula in Post #2.
The formula must be implemented where you want the result.
I've done that in sheet random and it works perfectly.
See attachment.

i don't understand why it don't work for me. i download file unlock and this is what it shows even when i openii.png
when changing the # in a2 or hit f9 nothing happens
refer to post#8 & post#9 - this is doing what you asked for - a random selection (number selected) from a list of names.
hi, torachan
not sure if we on the same page, here,
if you see post #9 bottom picture i have all sheets in the same workbook right inluding Random the last sheet in the workbook.
when i hit the pick names it creates the above sheet in the picture saparate from the whole workbook why. after the sheet1 creates by itself the one in workbook seems to work but why do i have to have the other open and not just work from within the workbook?"

You do not have to have both workbooks open - I thought it would be obvious that you would need to place the code in your workbook.
I found it easier to work with a simple file - I found your file so cluttered and unstable that I did not want compromise.
I have now put it in your sheet "Random" - it works for me however I give no guarantee it will continue to in your environment.
let me give it a try see if it works ty
wow thank you so much thats it you did it not sure why it was so confusing ty ty torachan
just have a question how can i added to my workbook to the latest version can i just make try making copy don't work.
