Secondary Vertical Axis Bar not in sync with Primary Vertical Axis

    Hi!

I need to plot the Temp. range of a machine taken at different times and no. of readings, which are plotted on Primary Y & X Axis, respectively. The Temp. data is available in increments of 5 degrees celsius.

I also need to plot the current temperature of the machine which I plot on the Secondary Y Axis. The length of the Bar showing the current temperature is equal to the max. no. of readings at any temp. in the data range.

The problem is that even though I have mentioned the max. and min. of the Secondary Y axis similar to the max. and min. of the primary Y axis, the values in the two axes never seem to be in sync, and my bar for current temp. is always above or below the actual corresponding value in the primary axis.

Can someone please advise what I am missing here, OR is there a better way to plot this chart with current Temp Bar showing with a Different Colour.

I'm not sure why you are using a logarithmic axis for the secondary vertical axis. I would also point out that the bar chart's primary vertical axis is a category axis, so the divisions have no numeric meaning. I made two edits that made it pretty close:

    1) unchecked the logarithmic scale option on the secondary y axis. Left other parameters the same.
    2) to get something like a numeric axis on the primary vertical axis, I formatted the primary vertical axis to be a date axis, and made sure that the data limits on the axis were 10/6/1901 to 10/15/1905 (corresponding to date serial numbers 645 and 2115). Note that, if you try to enter these dates with a 2 digit year, Excel will assume you mean 2001 or 2005, and it will give you numbers around 30000 or so.

From there, it should just be fine tuning.

    Hi Shorty,

I had selected Logarithmic scale out of frustration (just to show that I have tried all possible combinations). Seems I had not ;-)

Anyways, when I converted the Primary Y Axis to Date Axis, I immediately saw gaps in my chart (corresponding to the gaps in my data set, considering the 5 unit increments that I was trying to plot), which were not being shown by the earlier Chart, since the Category Axis was smoothing out the gaps. To elaborate, my data set was not 5, 10, 15, 20, 25... but more like 5, 10, 25...

This smoothing out was resulting in the wrong plotting of data on primary Y axis, and as pointed out by you, it was actually the Primary Y axis which was creating problem not the Secondary Axis.

On a trial basis, when I reset my Temp. data set for the Primary Y Axis with actual 5 unit increments (and without any gaps in the data set), the current Temp. bar was plotting in perfect sync on both Axis, without the need to change the primary Axis type to date Axis.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
