Links to another workbook not updating unless opened

Hi,

I have a dashboard which has links to different workbooks to keep on top of the department. I have recently created links to our purchasing register which doesn't seem to be updating unless I open it?

I have links to Q1 - Q4 spend and on the dashboard I have a =SUMIFS formula.

=SUMIFS('X:\04 - Quotes, Contracts & Purchasing\[Purchase Order Log.xlsx]2017'!$H$10:$H$159,'X:\04 - Quotes, Contracts & Purchasing\[Purchase Order Log.xlsx]2017'!$B$10:$B$159,"Q1")

Is there a reason why this doesn't update automatically? or is there another formula which will allow me to get the same result based on the formula above?

Have you tried closing the workbook with the links, opening the workbook being linked to, changing something then saving and closing it. Then open the linking workbook and seeing if it reflects the change

The Links work when I open the purchase register, but only then... If I just have my management dashboard open without pysically opening the purchasing register, it shows an #VALUE! error.
