    Linked-To Excel "locked for editing"

A new client hired us to help them. They have an Excel file, Common Data.xlsx, which is linked to by hundreds of Word documents. It's not shared, it's not in Sharepoint, it's just sitting in a network drive. They insist it's not posible to share it or put it in Sharepoint, a claim I'm not convinced of but am tolerating momentarily.

The problem they experience is typified by this scenario: a user opens a document with dozens of links to the Excel. The document contains a ToC (table of contents). The user clicks the ToC and Word spins its wheels for a few minutes, but the links are locked. Eventually, though the user has not opened Excel, an Excel window opens automatically with a message stating the current user has the Excel locked for editing. Only after clicking through this message once for every link in the file does Word jump to the page selected in the ToC.

I have limited experience working with Excel in this capacity. I've spent a few hours researching the error, sharing an Excel, linking to an Excel, etc., and I have come up empty. I've replicated this scenario with a simple Excel and Word document and it works without a hitch, so I'm inclined to think the way they're using the data file has harmed it in some way.

I apologize if this is the wrong forum in which to post this issue. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

Re: Linked-To Excel "locked for editing"

    Welcome to the forum.

There's a few things which might cause this - it's a frustrating issue which has come up regularly over the years - we used to get it all the time on a file at work before the office moved to Sharepoint.
Suggestion 1: try the various options listed on this site: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/...pdated-772014/
Suggestion 2: try this site too (if you've got permissions to update the registry): https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/942146
Suggestion 3: the file is locked by an indexing service not by Excel - try removing its location from the locations indexed, or stop the indexing service altogether - exactly what the service is might vary depending on what OS you're on, but try looking for 'Indexing Service' in 'Computer Management' or searching for 'cidaemon.exe', as starting points.
Suggestion 4: the file is actually 'locked' by not by the user in question but by another user, despite what the Excel window says - only solution I can think of then is to have an administrator check for running instances of Excel (unless the office is small enough to look around).
Suggestion 5: the first link found when the Word ToC is being updated is creating a temporary file, which then shows the Excel file as locked - try looking on the network drive for '~Common Data.xlsx' or similar (probably with a old date/time), then delete it.

For us, we didn't have admin rights as the systems were/are remotely managed, so we couldn't do most of (1) or any of (2) or (3), sometimes (4) or (5) were to blame but sometimes we just couldn't work it out at all and just had to live with the problem until it magically resolved itself - probably due to a server reboot or something similar. Hopefully that won't be the case for you - good luck.

I recently started a new job so am a bit busy and may not reply quickly. Sorry - it's not personal - I will reply eventually.
If your problem is solved, please go to 'Thread Tools' above your first post and 'Mark this Thread as Solved'.
If you use commas as your decimal separator (1,23 instead of 1.23) then please replace commas with semi-colons in your formulae.
You don't need to give me rep if I helped, but a thank-you is nice.

    Aardigspook:

Thank you very much for your reply. There are a few of these items I will have to coordinate with the client on before I can try them. I am trying the others. As you said, the problem is inconsistent,
so I won't know for certain whether my modifications succeeded or not until some time passes.

I will keep this thread updated as new information arises.

    Thanks again,
