Text overflow in a cell - the right way ( Soft hyphen )

    Hello

I do have text line's like "This a trumpeting Hippobrontosaurus". < just an example.

I put this in a cell with Text wrapping or text overflow on, or whatever it is named. In Dutch "Tekst verloop"

But it looks very ugly. Is there a way to add a hidden character f.e like a '-', like typing "This a trum-peting Hip-po-bron-to-sau-rus" that will truncate the words the right way?

    Any solutions possible?

As far as I know (and I'd be interested if someone knows otherwise) wrap text is either on or off and you can't fine tune it to hyphenate by syllables. But you can insert manual line feeds in a cell using Alt + Enter.

    Hi Jeff

Thank you. But Alt + Enter hide the text to the next line in the workfield above. I know I can change the height to see more line's but with a lot of text, it is always to short in height.

Also if the user change or vba code changes the cell width the it is even more ugly then before. The above unwanted situation/result is for the user understandable, but gaps created bij Alt+Enter is not.

Is it posible to create an vba script that will get activated when a column is widened or when text is changed what reads the text and do some hyphenate by syllables? That last part is the difficult part for me.

All this text is collected and edited for in use by Layout ( Sketchup ). The cell's ( as a table ) are copied into Layout.

Hmm. Sorry, but I'm just an Excel enthusiast, not one of the many really qualified posters here. I only posted because I didn't know if you knew about Alt + Enter.

I don't know what mechanism Excel uses to break for text wrapping according to column width, so I wouldn't know how to make it look at hyphens as well as spaces.

If it can be done, I'm sure there's someone on this forum who knows how ... I guess you just have to get their attention!

That feature is supported in Word as a soft hyphen; if the line doesn't break at the hyphen, it is invisible.

It is not supported in Excel.

@Jeff - tips are always welcome. Sometimes as a reminder.

@shg - That way, was the first what I tried, but like you wrote apaarently it is not supported.
B.t.w that was the word I was looking for; 'Soft hyphen'.
It was on the tip of one's keyboard.
    And now in the title.
