FIND Partcial match on a colum

I have a column A where there are more than 1000+ rows. These are description sentences. i need to find the partial match on this column and in column B i can have anything that can help me identify the match, be it be % or it can highlight the column or it would be nice to have the cell # for the most matched cell.

These are the examples. These details are in column 1. I just want to find most matched cells based on particular cell words. in column B i would like to have something like "Matched with cell ##### - 50%". This will hep me remove and fix the duplicates. This is a clean up project and its very time consuming checking each cell one by one. I would greatly appreciate the help.

Re: FIND Partcial match on a colum

Will you please attach a SMALL sample Excel workbook (10-20 rows of data is usually enough)? Please don't attach a picture of one (no-one will want to re-type all your stuff before starting).

    1. Make sure that your sample data are truly REPRESENTATIVE of your real data. The use of unrepresentative data is very frustrating and can lead to long delays in reaching a solution.

    2. Make sure that your desired solution is also shown (mock up the results manually).

    3. Make sure that all confidential information is removed first!!

    4. Try to avoid using merged cells. They cause lots of problems!

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment. So, to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: Just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.

    I have attached the sheet.

In Column B, i have entered desired results. It could be similar to that.
In column C, i have some comment which will help you understand the logic.

    Thanks again.

Unfortunately, your data layout is not compatible with the layout needed here. In this file, the formula is looking in column B for the values in column A and returning the best match in column C. In your case, you're looking in column A for the best match to a value in column A. the formula returns the searched value - as that is always the closest value!!

You might be able to work out a modification of the VBA. I can't - it's way beyond my "pay grade" (if only...). Google "Levenshtein partial match", or something similar, for further leads.
