Attachments with extensions .xls.xlsx will not open

Dear Members,

Sometimes I try to open an attachment, only to find it has two extensions, i.e. xls.xlsx, and my System cannot open it, while other Forum Members seem to have no problem opening same.

Is there perhaps a setting somewhere, that I need to change? I really don't know where the extra .xlsx happens to be included in any such attachments.

The linked file has the extension .xls only. Maybe it was changed later but there is no edit note on the post.

This is in the VBA forum. Is this a VBA issue?

If I create a file ending in .xls.xlsx and then click on it from Windows Explorer it opens fine.

Windows finds the part after the last dot and treats that as the file extension for purposes of opening the file. This is why hackers can send you a file that is named FunnyPicture.JPG.exe and if you do not have "show extensions" turned you see FunnyPicture.JPG and the naive recipient will click on it and get a virus.

It stops working with a message stating that "The File cannot be opened"
