    color pencils

    Hi,
When I used to be a pupil and then a student, I always got amazed to see how girls wrote, emphasized, encircled or painted over something in their notebooks with color pencils or markers. In my notebooks there was just one color – blue (black), it was a pen. Not a lot of boys used more colors than i did. And then I began to use Excel. Everything has remained the same way. Sometimes I can use filling especially as CF to attract attention to specific cells. And that is all. No borders, there is a grid. Not like standard tables in Excel nor user defined tables.  Now sometimes I cannot see data in a table, it is like a kaleidoscope.
What do you think about excessive formatting?

I avoid it any visual fluff on my data, with exception of final dashboard / report.
Those I use color scheme, to relate same category between different charts etc.

Data should be stored as such without additional clutter. And if attention needs to be brought to certain record, I tend to have query tool added to pull those out.

    Re: color pencils

When we see it here in Excel t's often nauseating. Not the same at all, though, as girls in school using colours for highlighting and coding their work: in the case of the former, it's usually a case of style over substance, because "I can" (and mostly perpetrated by MEN!), whereas in the case of the latter, it's methodical and often quite effectve.

This is a generalised answer, but as a secondary school teacher, I see it first-hand every day, especially at this time of year when exam classes are moving into revision phase.

So, in short: please don't malign the girls for using colours to highlight and categorise their work.

Well, it can be OK, but based on some of the ghastly efforts we see here from time to time, I think it might be!!!

For what it's worth, I don't use much colour in my own spreadsheets. It's a light touch on the gridlines, too. A little bit of bold text here and there, and increased letter size for headers, and apart from a bit (and I mean a bit!) of conditional formatting (RAG flags), that's about it.

What are you trying to show here?

You have to bear in mind that there are two different conventions with dates: in the US, mm/dd/yyyy is correct, whereas here in the UK and pretty much everywhere else it's dd/mm/yyyy.

I like light PASTEL shading (and in work they're widely referred to as "Glenn's girlie spreadsheets") to delineate separate functional areas in a sheet. However, some of the taste crimes that turn up here regularly are truly migraine-inducing

I agree with Glenn: apart from the RAG tags, if I want to shade at all, it tends to be in very light mauve.

    Re: color pencils

I literally have three highlighter colors in my pocket right now: yellow, orange, and pink. (My green and blue highlighters? They're in my bag, I don't need them on a day-to-day basis.) Plus the pencil, pen, and pocket scale, obvs.

I used coloring when I was doing the trial balances for different categories such as "call the rep" , "ach the balance" etc.
