I have a data set with one datetime column.
I'd like to generate a chart that approximates the count of rows over the date range with a low resolution.
I don't mind reading through how to do this, but I am not even clear what the correct approach is so I am kind of lost. I'd be grateful for any pointers!

You can use a pivot chart and grouped data to count the exact number of rows for each date value - by day, week, month, quarter, year....
So you need to better explain what you actually want, with a simple example.

That actually helped me understand what to search for.
I created two computed columns with the year and month of each date, created the grouped pivot, then the chart built automatically exactly as I hoped.

Great! But if you have dates in your table already, you don't need to compute year and month - those are standard groupings available by default.

Well that would be great to save time and effort, if we assume I have a two-column data set of name to birthday, how do I accomplish this to achieve the same grouping shown in the image?

Simply drag your date field to both the row and data areas - for me, the dates were grouped automatically into year and quarter. All I needed to do was to uncheck quarter, and months became the secondary grouping.
